Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is there a minimum hire period?
Yes our minimum hire period is one week. You are welcome to hire for a shorter period than this but the minimum hire period fee for one week will still apply.
  • Can I extend my hire?
Yes we do try to allow people to extend hires where possible and have had many customers who have hired from us mid-long term. If this is your situation do let us know as being able to extend does depend on whether we have other bookings in place.
  • Do I need to pay for the full hire cost upfront or can I pay weekly?
Bookings made on our website require the full payment to be made but it is possible to pay weekly in advance. Please contact us on info@potterywheels.co.nz if this is your preference.
  • Do you offer a delivery and pick-up service?
Yes, we offer a service where we will deliver your wheel to you at the start of your hire and pick-up your wheel at the end of your hire. We offer this service to Auckland residents who have an address within 20Km of the Auckland CBD. The cost for this service is $50.
  • What size is the pottery wheel?
The pottery wheel is fairly compact with approximate dimensions of 750mm length x 600mm width x 550mm height. They can be transported in the boot of most vehicles and where this hasn't been possible they have also been transported in front and back seats of vehicles.
  • Do I need experience to hire a pottery wheel?
The pottery wheels themselves are straightforward to use and we can talk you through how to operate it if you haven't used one before. This can work well for children who looking to experience the wheel or people that are up for the challenge of teaching themselves to throw. We do recommend if you are new to pottery that you attend a class in your local area to get to know clay and the art of throwing. Throwing on a pottery wheel can be much more challenging than it appears and it can take a quite a bit of practise to get to a point where you can centre the clay and throw objects. There are a number of excellent classes available throughout the greater Auckland area including short one off taster classes! We're always happy to share information about classes we know about so do get in contact if you would like more information on these.
  • I have contacted you but not heard back?
We do respond to all messages we receive (usually on the same day). Unfortunately some of our responses do end up in the junk email folder so if you are waiting for a response please do check there or message us on 0210425422 to follow up.
  • Do you sell clay and tools?
We do have starter tool kit sets available for $15 and Macs Mud clay available for purchase when you hire a wheel. We have Macs Mud Buff Stoneware (20kgs) for $55 and Macs Mud Classic White (20kgs) for $65. Please add this to your order when booking your wheel.
  • Do you provide bats?
Sorry we don't provide bats with the wheels. You will need to provide your own if you are wanting to use them.
  • Do you offer gift vouchers?
Yes we do. These are not able to be purchased online so if you are wanting a gift voucher please contact us at info@potterywheels.co.nz.
  • Where can I fire and glaze my work?
There are pottery clubs and centres all around Auckland which you can join and this allows access to the glazes and kilns. Alternately, there are places around which offer just kiln firings so you can take your work to them and they will do that for you. There are also places where you can book in for glazing sessions. Let us know if you're looking for places to do this and we can let you know of the places we're aware of offering these services.
